About the Author:
Hi, I’m Camilla and I’m the author of the Stella Mayweather Series, an urban fantasy/mystery. The series starts with Illicit Magic and a lonely young woman, Stella, who has been caught up in a terrifying witch hunt and is whisked thousands of miles away to what she thinks is safety to learn her craft. The series is a blend of magic, mystery and romance with a splash of humour – and while the girls really do go all out to save themselves, there’s always a hunky guy or two on hand to help them out. The series continues with Unruly Magic and Devious Magic, both out now.
I live in London, England, but I try to travel as often as I can – I’ve been all over the US and Europe. In my day job I’m a journalist and editor so I write for magazines, newspapers and websites throughout the world (my favourite assignment was spending a week riding rollercoasters – if you listen carefully you can probably still hear me screaming) but writing fiction has always been my first love.
1. Tell us a bit about the world of the Stella Mayweather series.
Stella’s world is a contemporary one, with an extra secretive layer of magic hidden from human eyes. Though witches are the primary paranormal being in this series, we’ll also meet shapeshifters, werewolves, demons, daemons and a vampire or two as the series goes on. My characters are complex and diverse; their secrets unravel to show how deceptive and destructive magic can be in the wrong hands. Each title in their series reflects the overarching nature of magic of the book.
2. Who are the Brotherhood and what’s their connection to Stella?
The Brotherhood are a secretive group of witch hunters who track down and kill witches. They have no problem in exposing witches but although the media is intrigued by the serial killings they remain skeptical about witches’ existence. Stella is the next witch in their sights but do they really want to kill her or is something more nefarious at play?
3. How would you describe Stella in one word? What about Étoile?
For Stella, I’m going to go with “determined”.
Étoile (Stella’s close friend) is a tough one – “complex”.
4. Who’d you rather go out with, Evan or Marc? 😀
Hah! That’s easy. Evan. Marc is a bit of a twit, isn’t he? I feel sorry for him though. He’s going to be very different when we next see him.
5. Could you perhaps tell us a bit about the Council and what it’s about?
The Council is the governing body of witches. Archaic, inept and unable to wield control, they have a lot of internal problems. Due to their unaccountability, problems are rife in the Council, leading to some serious (crystal!) balls being dropped, threatening their existence. The reformation of the Council is something that will come up through the series.
6. What are daemons? What’s the difference between them and witches?
Daemons are the half-blood offspring of demons and their human partners. They’re neither intrinsically bad nor good, though there is prejudice against them from both demons and witches due to age old problems. They can be powerful and possess a lot of the same abilities as witches, though their magic is different. There’s “bad blood” between the two societies. They govern themselves, rarely intervening in each other’s world.
7. What can your readers expect from book #2 in the series?
The events of book 2, Unruly Magic, start a couple of months after Illicit Magic. We’re going to find Stella carving out a new life for herself, as well as trying to find someone very important to her. She’s toughened up and she’s still learning who to trust but her abilities allow her to aid another witch in crisis.
8. Tell us a bit about yourself. What inspired you to write this book?
I wanted to write about a heroine who was very much an everyday woman. Stella certainly can’t dropkick a vampire across a street! Instead, she’s new to magic and the internal wranglings of a secretive society that she must find a place in. I wanted her to grow in her abilities and sense of self, knowing that ultimately she is responsible for saving herself, rather than waiting for a powerful guy to rescue her. That’s not to say there isn’t a gorgeous guy around who would gladly put himself in harm’s way for her.
As for me, I’m a freelance journalist and editor and I write for publications internationally. I’m the author of several fiction and non-fiction titles. I live in London, UK, with my family.
9. How do you see the series developing over time?
We’re going to see Stella really grow up and become more certain of herself and her magic. She’ll have a lot to overcome (it would be pretty dull if she didn’t!) so we’ll see more ructions from the Brotherhood and she’ll be an integral part of the Council’s reformation. There will be secrets and betrayals as well as love and laughter. She’ll also meet some unexpected family members too.
10. Have any other projects you’re working on? Give us something to look forward to.
I’ve just finished writing a lighthearted mystery trilogy about an office temp who is dragged into a murder and fraud investigation when she witnesses her boss’ body being disposed of. It’s been a lot of fun to write. Now I’m finished, I’m deep into writing the fourth book of the Stella series.
