Seventeen year old Lisa Brown’s life is falling apart. First, her mother and father divorce, then their house forecloses and now, her mother has decided to commit herself to a psychiatric hospital.

If that weren’t enough, she must leave sunny south Florida to attend a boarding school full of geniuses in cold, Lynn, Massachusetts. The city where the locals chant “Lynn, Lynn, city of sin; you never come out the way you went in.”

And, they aren’t kidding. Lisa must live in a tiny shack with two strange teenagers, a dog named Pig who growls when you look at him and a cat named Rat. “Mind the cat,” everyone says. What the heck is wrong with this place?

Lisa thinks she’s landed in her own house of horrors with the anti-social Alex and his facetious sister Ally. But, the real drama begins the day she is struck by lightning…

I Didn’t Work in the Real World

I didn’t grow up like most people. While classmates lined up in front of the bathroom mirror, I  walked past them, day dreaming. When we were told to write a story, I cheered. Performances impressed me, Chorus wasn’t frightening, neither was band, art or drama.

Bizarre people and things were my norm. People with funny socks? Awesome! Singing songs to poor male victims I thought were cute? A thing my friends and I did. Skipping through the schoolyard, pretending to be cheerleaders for the soccer players? (I was the S in T I G E R S!)

As time goes on few of your friends still want to play these silly games. Acting, singing, learning an instrument, drawing become things that talented persons do… As you age, groups form. Imagination is replaced with reality. Each group seems to be less and less involved with each other.

But, I didn’t work in the real world.

I spent my Saturdays sitting in the lounge at Jan McArt’s Royal Palm Dinner Theater. My normal, was watching actors stretch, sing, practice their lines, and dress for their next act My first ideals were set early. I went home, read books, entered other worlds, went to the theater with my mother (she was a bar maid and a waitress) watched with my very eyes new shows, new worlds, always something new and exciting…

I had to try everything! Acting, singing, dancing, art, writing, the clarinet; I didn’t fit in any group. Why would I want to be in just one? There were so many things to try. (Except basketball; I broke more pairs of glasses in that game. Sigh.)

When I was old enough, I worked at the theater. High school can be tough on the imaginative. I never noticed. Work was another world far from reality. Sure I worked hard. But, being in that sort of environment taught me to ‘beat to my own drum’, be my own person, and not judge others for their creativity…

So, what I’m trying to say is, thank you Jan McArt, for giving me a place to flourish! Thank you for not making me grow up in the real world. Because of you, I never knew there was anything wrong with dreaming.
