Detective Matthew Bennett doesn’t believe in ghosts. So when the spirit of a murdered child leads him to her body, he’s shaken to the core–and taken off the case. Unable to explain his vision, or to let go of the investigation, Matthew turns to renowned medium Kiernan Fitzpatrick. Though he has doubts about Kiernan’s claims to communicate with the dead, Matt is nevertheless drawn to the handsome psychic, who awakens feelings he thought were long-buried.
Haunted by the lingering spirit of the little girl, Kiernan is compelled to aid in the search for her killer. The chance to get closer to the enigmatic Matt is an unexpected bonus. Although Kiernan’s been betrayed by people who turned out to be more interested in his fame than in himself, with Matt he’s willing to risk his heart. As the two men grow closer, Kiernan helps Matt rediscover that life offers no guarantees–but love offers a reason to believe…
Bomy’s Flutter: touching, engaging and fun
World Building: Contemporary, but it had a hint of paranormal since one of the characters in the main couple is a medium and we do meet some ghostly apparitions.
Characters: I loved Matthew, but I’m biased like that, I tend to like cops/detectives and such, uniforms and all of that. He had a heartbreaking past, made perfect sense and was very real to me, a solid character that I easily fell in tune with and loved. Kiernan was fun, more on the playful vibe but very easy to love as well, he was one of those awesome guys you wish real hard will have a happy ending. The way they interacted was interesting, touching and engaging since they’re not necessarily opposites but different types of personalities, they completed each other in a way I couldn’t help but love. Good chemistry and hot one on one, though more romantic then steamy if you ask me, and not a lot of it. This is not a smutty read, the emphasis is on feelings as far as the romance arc goes.
Plot: I’m a sucker for crime/investigation and loved the main couple so for me this was the perfect story. There was a good suspense/mystery theme going on, it kept me guessing and I love that in investigation stories. It was touching in itself, I was very emotionally invested in the case. The story flowed well and the romantic arc had a happy ending.
Writing: Third person narrative from Mathew’s POV, smooth storytelling and a great pace of events, intriguing story and good action scenes. I liked the way the world looked as presented by this author, I’m very likely to read other works since I haven’t yet, to my shame, but I do know other titles and intended to read them at some point…just never really got to, story of my bookish life, lol.
Curb Appeal: Real high, compulsive buy material. Awesome cover, the blurb hits all the right spots for me (themes, tension, hint at the sort of ending I’ll get). This is what I’d call a full package with awesome wrapping.
It was a very close call between a 5 and a 4 rating, but ultimately it felt like more of a 4 so I stuck with that.
All in all, this was an awesome romantic suspense read and I’m glad I read it in December, I recommend you give it a try too if you’re in the mood for some yummy reading.
