    To Rome with Love
    by Susanna Carr

My latest contemporary romance, Her Shameful Secret, is set in Rome. Unfortunately, I haven’t been to the famous city. There are some challenges in writing about a well-known place you haven’t visited. You don’t want to get anything wrong but you may need to use some artist license. Most of all, you want to capture the essence of the city and make it recognizable. Since hopping over to Italy for a research trip was out of the question, there were a few resources I used while writing the story:
Pictures. Thank goodness for Google and the public library. I was fortunate that I could ask about the pictures from friends and family who had visited Italy. I was struck by the rich colors, the artistic details and the vibrant history of the city. I also studied the travel guides. Most of the facts did not show up in my book because I didn’t want it to sound like a travelogue. Instead, the information helped me when I was setting the scene.
Music. I’m one of those authors who like to write to music. I don’t make a playlist but instead I listen to a soundtrack during the entire process of writing the book. For Her Shameful Secret, I chose to listen to Andrea Bocelli’s Romanza. (How could I not?) I don’t know Italian but it was the soaring music that strongly influenced the story. There were some songs that I put on repeat while I was writing the emotional scenes.
Movies. Some of the classic romantic movies are set in Rome and I knew this was a resource I shouldn’t ignore. I watched Roman Holiday and Three Coins in the Fountain. However, these stories were made in the 1950s and I knew I needed something more current. So I rounded it out with–I’m almost embarrassed to admit it–The Lizzie McGuire Movie and Eat, Pray, Love. It’s surprising how each story gave a different view of Rome.
The Rome that you will see in my book may be different from the one you’ve visited or have watched in movies. My Rome is idealized and sophisticated, much like the Roman hero in my story! It’s filled with color, beauty and plenty of romance. I hope I captured the spirit of Rome for you to enjoy.
