Fire & Flood (Fire & Flood #1)
Time is slipping away….
Tella Holloway is losing it. Her brother is sick, and when a dozen doctors can’t determine what’s wrong, her parents decide to move to Montana for the fresh air. She’s lost her friends, her parents are driving her crazy, her brother is dying—and she’s helpless to change anything.
Until she receives mysterious instructions on how to become a Contender in the Brimstone Bleed. It’s an epic race across jungle, desert, ocean, and mountain that could win her the prize she desperately desires: the Cure for her brother’s illness. But all the Contenders are after the Cure for people they love, and there’s no guarantee that Tella (or any of them) will survive the race.
The jungle is terrifying, the clock is ticking, and Tella knows she can’t trust the allies she makes. And one big question emerges: Why have so many fallen sick in the first place?
Victoria Scott’s breathtaking novel grabs readers by the throat and doesn’t let go.

Review
If you are familiar with Victoria Scott`s Dante Walker series, then Fire and Flood will be a whole new experience if your apart of her fan base. While I cant exactly say it will be a good or bad one, it is definitely unique.
I have to start out by saying this — I have a really bad habit of reading reviews on goodreads either before or while Im reading the book. I happened to come across a review that compared Fire and Flood to The Hunger Games, and that this book is just a rip off. If you changed your mind about reading this book because of a review like this, then change it back.
This book is NOTHING like the Hunger Games. Like I said above, its unique.
While a bit dull at first, Fire and Flood picked up by at least the middle. Its one fight after another — a battle for survival. This book will leave you on the edge of your seat wanting to know what will happen next, what the characters will do next, what these cute things called Pandoras will evolve into next. By the end of the book, I wanted the next one so bad I could have begged Victoria Scott just to tell me what she will write.
Tella did annoy me quite a bit throughout the book. I did not connect with her in any way. Shes a preppy.. prep, even while racing for her and her brother`s life. I will admit though, there were a few times I started to warm up to her. I liked watching her “grow” throughout the book, and it wasnt one of those situations where the main character is so terrible one page you want to strangle her and the next shes a perfect angel and getting medals.
There is a bit of romance, of course, maybe some heavy kissing, but Im unsure if it will evolve in the next book. I hope so. Go team Guy. The romance wasnt as overwhelming in Fire and Flood as in most YA books.
Each character was unique in their own way, and at every turn I was left guessing. I thourouly enjoyed it, after I got passed what I considered the boring part. I had to skip through more than half of Twilight before I could get into it.
Fire and Flood is a must read. I rate it four stars, and am anxiously waiting the second book. I absolutely recommend this book for everyone, not just YA readers.
I’m glad it’s finally different from The Hunger Games, I haven’t read it I confess but heard a lot of great things about it, so I’m curious to try it as well now.

Sounds pretty good! That’s great it was so enjoyable even with not totally connecting with a character.

She totally annoyed me too! But I think that was absolutely the point and like you said it was nice to see her grow from someone I wouldn’t help if she were dying of thirst to someone that you totally would love to have watching your back.

I cant wait to see how she is in the second book. I hope she isn’t one of those characters who reverts back to the way she was. And I liked how she even mentioned that sh e even caught herself being annoying at times (for lack of words to not be a spoiler).

Yeah, reviews for this have kind of been all over. I like Victoria, so I plan on reading this eventually no matter what, but I just need to be in the right mood for it.
