As a bear-shifter in a pack roaming the Scottish countryside, Bryce Matheson embodies brute force and untamed abandon. As a widower, he’s running scared. When Bryce attempted to open his scarred heart to another, she grew tired of waiting for him to state his intentions, and the unearthly beauty spurned him for someone who wasn’t worthy. But now that fate has conspired to set Kenzie Denune free once again, Bryce vows to finally win her love.
Kenzie is a witch who summons her powers to protect those too weak to care for themselves. After surviving an abusive husband, she swears off men—even men like Bryce, whose iron muscles make her knees weak, and whose piercing eyes fill her with longing. Her life’s purpose is to help others. However, dark forces have different plans for her gifts. To save herself, Kenzie must team up with the shifter who has always stirred her soul—and trust in a passion powerful enough to set her blood aflame.
That whole story was a whirlwind of witchy mischief! It was action packed and filled with bear shifters, crazy parents, and of course witches!! I do have to say I enjoyed the dialogue between all the characters and I especially enjoyed the American character Effie. This story was pretty fast paced and didn’t really hold back on the punches.
Kenzie has been in love with her childhood best friend Bryce, her whole life. But after his rejection and the unspeakable abuse she suffered from her late husband, finding the will to move on is harder now than ever. Especially when Bryce wants back in Kenzie’s life no matter the consequences. But between his advances, her family secrets coming to light, and her own powers manifesting, however will she make the right decision? Kenzie’s character was a mess of contradictions in my opinion. Kenzie is rather impulsive and indecisive with her decision making. As a character she was hard to follow sometimes.
Bryce has messed up. When his feelings for Kenzie started to trump his feelings for his dead wife, he thought the best thing he could do was to call off their relationship. But little did he know that months later he would realize his horrendous mistake. He decides that nothing or no one is going to stand in his way of claiming his beloved. I liked Bryce after he pulled his head out of his ass and was committed to being with Kenzie forever. He really tried his best to be there for her, do things for her, and overall just showed that he cared.
I don’t necessarily feel like I was at a complete loss while reading but at the same time I felt like I would have understood things more if I had read the first book. A Highlander’s Passion gives little snippets of what happened in the first novel in the series and you kind of just have to take it at face value and be resigned not to know the full story. I kind of felt like I was playing catch up in a sense. Bryce and Kenzie have a pretty tumultuous relationship together. I felt like I was getting thrown into the deep end of their relationship without actually going through the buildup of their bond. The story also featured some pretty heavy topics within the first few chapters such as miscarriage and domestic abuse.
My biggest problem with the story was the writing. There were tons of little snippets of Scottish throughout the story. I’ve read other novels that have featured British words and Irish words but not enough to throw off my reading like this story did. For was changed to “fer”, you was changed to “ye”, and don’t was changed to “dinna”. So since I wasn’t used to this type of language, the words had me stumbling quite a bit and I did have to read sentences over again to make sure I understood what they were saying. Also Bryce’s daughter, Colleen, was five years old and pretty much talked like a ten year old. I liked her character but I think her speaking skills were way above what they should have been.
Ultimately this was crazy roller coaster ride of angst, danger, and above all else love. The characters all band together to keep one individual safe and if that isn’t love then I don’t know what is! If you like stories that feature men in kilts and love shifters as well as witches this story completely for you!
