Under a burning sun more than a thousand miles from home, Lynn Stevens is trying to get her life back on track and leave memories of that one fateful night behind. She meets Dan, a young man with strangely erratic behavior and smoldering brown eyes, who is on an involuntary vacation with his parents. In him, she sees her own struggle reflected every time she is starting to get too close.
Dan doesn’t like being touched. But when he sets out to uncover Lynn’s secret, it means he’ll have to tell her some secrets of his own.
‘Heat’ is Lis Lucassen’s New Adult debut novel. This book puts her on the map in the Netherlands as the first-ever NA author from her own country.
Worldbuilding: This story takes place at the resort: Tropical Beach Hotel, which is on a tiny island in Holland. This was such a different read for me because I don’t read too many books that take place in hotels and very rarely do I read books that take place in Europe!! But I really liked it!
Characters: The main characters in this story were Lynn and Dan. Gosh these two were a heartbreaking bunch. I know a lot of other readers had some issues with Dan and just couldn’t really connect with him but hot damn I loved his character!!!!! Both characters had such crappy situations happen to them but were able to help each other be reborn and find happiness again.
Plot: This plot was sort of different than what I have been reading lately. There were no ex’s, no crazy people trying to hurt the main characters, it was actually pretty chill. If anything there was an air of mystery surrounding both of their back stories. A big story arc for both characters was over coming one’s past. And it didn’t hurt that they insanely liked each other either.
Writing: This story was told in third person points of view of both Lynn and Dan. It was also told in past/present points of view as well. I really enjoyed the fact that both of their pasts weren’t told straight away. It made the story more intriguing and had me impatiently flipping through the pages trying to figure out why they are the way they are! Another thing I loved about this story was the way Dan’s feelings were described. It made my heart ache for him and had me feeling all his emotions as well!
Curb Appeal: The cover is awesome!!! I really think it captures both characters flawlessly. The blurb is definitely interesting. But I really wish that it captured more of Dan’s struggle because he is honestly the shining star of this novel!
Ultimately: I really liked this novel! The emotions that were described took me on a heartbreaking ride and left me hopeful that even when there seems to be no light at the end of the tunnel there in fact is one and it can show up in the most random of places! If you’re in the mood for a story that has no cliffhanger and is about two people becoming better versions of themselves come and check this out!!!!!
I couldn't have said that better myself! Reading is huge passion of mine. And I'm glad that books not only expand my world view but that they bring the wonderful people who created them into my life. You can always find me with a book and an eclectic mix of music on. I am a HEA junkie extraordinaire! I am a Beta reader, who loves helping authors bring their characters to life. As well as an avid romance reader (every and anything ;D) turned aspiring author.
