When Kat accidentally rips apart an old picture book, she’s magically transported into the world of Cinderella–as Katriona, one of the ugly stepsisters! Life turns upside down now that she’s a highborn lady and must learn how to survive the social season, including how to get through the door in a huge metal hoop skirt. To get back, she’ll have to complete the story, right to the end of happily ever after. But the odds are huge: the other stepsister is drop-dead gorgeous, the fairy godmother is nowhere to be found, and the prince, despite being insanely hot, openly dislikes balls. Can she ever return to the modern world?

Wow! I absolutely loved this novel!!! It is so different from the normal young adult/new adult stories but still manages to get those first feelings of butterflies across! This was not your average girl meets boy and they fall in love story. It ended up being so much more! This story is the classic tale of Cinderella but from the ugly stepsister’s point of view.

Kat is your average seventeen year old high schooler living in Oakleigh, Indiana. She’s a bookworm and can’t talk to a boy without a). Looking at him like a gaping fish, b). Stuttering, and c). Stumbling. She doesn’t think her life can get much worse after doing all three in front of the new hot transfer student, Gabriel. But little did she know that after picking up an old tattered copy of Cinderella, ripping it, and falling down the stairs of her attic, that her whole life was about to be turned upside down!

This story was such a cool twist on Cinderella. Kat is magically transported into the story and wakes up as the ugly stepsister, Katriona Bradshaw. To get back to her own reality, she has to complete the story right till the very end of the happily ever after. She has to brave her crazy beautiful ice queen sister, survive the social season, all while trying to learn the ins and outs of this new life. I’ve read a few fairy tale retelling stories but never a Cinderella one. But I’m so glad that this caught my attention!!

The arcs in this novel were great! This story didn’t just have the “Cinderella” arc as its main focus. There were a few other story arcs that the novel presented as well. One story arc was standing up for children’s rights. As left field as that arc sounds it really meshed well with the story and I loved how it built up and was resolved. Since Kat was transported back in time, laws at that time for child labor were nonexistent and she becomes a champion for them. Another arc was the traditional romance between the heroine and hero. And lastly was the arc of Kat’s modern day life.

This novel was such an adventure and definitely became one of my all-time favorite stories by the ending! The only bone I had to pick with it was that said ending!! The story did a good job of wrapping up loose ends and showing a type of happily ever after but it wasn’t resolved enough for me! I wanted some magic juju going on to let the hero and heroine have the happily ever after that they deserved!

Ultimately this was a ridiculously awesome ride! The cover was on point, the blurb was on point, and the story left me feeling all giddy inside. Honestly I wish that this story could have been a series!! Or hot damn, have the author do other fairy tale retellings! If you’re in the mood for a crazy adventure, some sweet romance, and villains that just won’t quit, come and find out why The Ugly Stepsister is anything but!!!
