My name is Carter Reynolds. I was born a bastard and I’ll die a bastard. I learnt it at a young age, and nothing and nobody can change that. I’m on a one-way path of destruction, and god help anyone who gets in my way. I hate my life. Actually, I hate pretty much everything.
That’s until I meet the kid next door. Indi-freakin’-ana. My dislike for her is instant. From the moment I lay eyes on her, she ignites something within me. She makes me feel things I thought I was incapable of feeling. I don’t like it, not one bit. When she looks at me with her big, beautiful, haunting, green eyes, it’s like she can see into the depths of my soul. It freaks me the hell out. She’s like sunshine and rainbows in my world of gloom and doom. I hate sunshine and rainbows.
I’m Indiana Montgomery, my friends call me Indi. Despite losing my mum at the age of six, I have a wonderful life and great friends. My dad more than makes up for the fact that I only have one parent. I’m his little girl, the centre of his world. I adore him.
When Carter Reynolds moves in next door, my life takes a turn for the worse. He’s gorgeous—sinfully hot, but that’s where my compliments end. He seems hell bent on making my life miserable. He acts tough, but when I look into his eyes I don’t see it. I see hurt and pain. To me, he seems lost.
I should hate him for the way he treats me, but surprisingly I don’t. If anything, I feel sorry for him. I want to help him find peace. Help him find the light that I know is buried somewhere within his darkness, but, he won’t have a bar of it.
He’s warned me time and time again to stay away, but I can’t. I’m drawn to him for some reason. He’s always referring to himself as a bastard. That may be true, but to me, he’s more like a beautifully, misunderstood bastard. Whether he likes it or not, I refuse to give up on him.
Worldbuilding: This novel takes place in the suburbs of Sydney, Australia and then later, Newcastle.
Characters: The main characters of this novel were Indiana and Carter. Hot damn I loved this hero and heroine combination!! They brought out my laughter and tears and yelling but in the end they were so heartwarming. Indiana loathes her next door neighbor. He’s rude, callous, and not that it matters but he’s ridiculously hot too. He infuriates her and in the next minute captivates her. As they grow closer the walls they erected oh so long ago threaten to tumble down. Carter can’t wait to get out of this hell hole. Just six more months and he is cutting out and never looking back. He just didn’t count on the beautifully sweet next door neighbor, Indiana. He hates her on sight and tries his hardest to push her away but the universe has other plans in mind. The wall around his heart cracks a little more every day and the closer he gets to Indiana, the closer he is allowing himself the possibility heartbreak. Will he stay and let the hate and anger bleed out of his heart for Indiana or will it all become too much and force him to give up the only thing in his life that has made him whole?
Plot: This novel was not your typical romance. Usually stories tend to focus on one part of the hero and heroine’s life and that’s it. This story’s plot was very well developed and it focused on years. These characters went from meeting in high school to going through college to reuniting to going through a very huge hardship to finding their happily ever after. All of the characters that were mentioned were wrapped up nicely by the end of the book. There were no loose ends and I loved the HEA!!
Writing: This novel is told in first person points of view of Carter and Indiana. It was also told in Part One and Part Two and had a few time jumps. I loved having both Carter and Indiana’s point of view. From them not being together to actually developing a relationship it was awesome to have both sides.
Curb Appeal: This cover is ridiculously hot!!! I love it but at the same time it would’ve been nice to have Indiana represented in some way as well. The blurb hooked me from the first couple of sentences!! I loved that it had both Indiana and Carter because it really summarizes their initial reaction to each other and what they go through really well.
Ultimately: This was a phenomenal new adult book that reminded me that there are good story tellers still out there! I would love to have this novel be the first in a new series but everything was wrapped up so nicely I have no idea where these characters could go! All in all if you are in the mood for a smoking hot romance that rough around the edges and a little biting then come check out why Carter was born and will die a Bastard!!!!!!
I couldn't have said that better myself! Reading is huge passion of mine. And I'm glad that books not only expand my world view but that they bring the wonderful people who created them into my life. You can always find me with a book and an eclectic mix of music on. I am a HEA junkie extraordinaire! I am a Beta reader, who loves helping authors bring their characters to life. As well as an avid romance reader (every and anything ;D) turned aspiring author.
