Tzipporah Berger is thirty-seven and single, which is practically unheard of in the Orthodox Jewish community she now calls home. Her increasing religiosity and need for kink may have broken up her first marriage, but she’s decided it’s time to try again. And the rabbi’s wife has just the man in mind.
Elan Klein is the neighborhood butcher whose intimidating size and gruff manner hint at a deliciously forceful personality. But BDSM isn’t exactly something you discuss during an Orthodox courtship. Will a marriage to Elan solidify her place in the community that she loves and provide the domination and pain Tzipporah craves or will she forever have to rely on flights of fancy to satisfy her needs?
I wasn’t really sure what to expect from this story when I read the blurb but man did it intrigue me! This was a novella written for the Goodreads BDSM Group’s Bring Out Your Kink writing event. Members provided a picture and a prompt to authors to inspire an original story. This novella seriously blew me away!! This encompassed such an eclectic mix of feelings and themes throughout the story, that I’m still left reeling. There were times where I connected or identified with the main character Tzipporah and I loved how beautiful this story turned out to be!!
Tzipporah Berger is scatterbrained woman in much of her everyday life but not in what matters most to her: her religion and her relationship. Her first marriage didn’t work out so well but that isn’t stopping her from finding a man who will embrace her new found religiousness and her hidden need for kink. Tzipporah was such a sweet character and I loved her!! I absolutely adored how religious and modest she was but also how liberated enough she was to ask for her pleasure. That isn’t something you see too much in novels these days and this ended up being amazingly refreshing and freaking awesomely original!!!!!
Elan Klein is the neighborhood butcher who has caught Tzipporah’s eye. Even though he is big and intimidating, she can’t help but feel a thrill run through her every time he looks at her. He is a pillar within the Orthodox Jewish community and commands her attention every time she is in his presence. Can a marriage between the two, fill the holes inside their hearts or will their broken hearts be too fragmented to help each other heal? Elan was really a gruff character to me and almost too brusque to like until Tzipporah wore him down! There were parts where I wished he was more endearing towards Tzipporah but I understood that he had reservations that needed to be figured out first.
When I first read the prompt and what the picture was supposed to be, it all seemed deeply profound. Even before I began reading the novella I was blown away. And as I got sucked into Tzipporah’s world, the story spoke to me. As a Muslim I have chosen to cover my hair with a hijab (scarf) and I do get funny looks and people whispering when I walk by. The parallels of a Jewish woman and a Muslim woman covering their hair and the reasons why were astonishing. And I was astounded to see my feelings on the subject written in this story in such a beautiful and touching way.
All in all even though this story was a novella it was pretty well rounded in the sense that it felt like a whole story. I was taken on a journey with Tzipporah and Elan and came out absolutely moved by their tale. That’s not to say there wasn’t times that I wanted to yell at the characters or cry with them! This also had many religious words that I had to look up to help me better understand the story only to come to find out there was a glossary in the back of the book the whole time!! Ultimately if you are in the mood for some hot kink with deeply heartfelt characters that have an amazing story, then come find out why Tzipporah is Craving Flight!!!
I couldn't have said that better myself! Reading is huge passion of mine. And I'm glad that books not only expand my world view but that they bring the wonderful people who created them into my life. You can always find me with a book and an eclectic mix of music on. I am a HEA junkie extraordinaire! I am a Beta reader, who loves helping authors bring their characters to life. As well as an avid romance reader (every and anything ;D) turned aspiring author.
