“I own you. I have the piece of paper to prove it. It’s undeniable and unbreakable. You belong to me until you’ve paid off your debts.”
Nila Weaver’s family is indebted. Being the first born daughter, her life is forfeit to the first born son of the Hawks to pay for sins of ancestors past. The dark ages might have come and gone, but debts never leave. She has no choice in the matter.
She is no longer free.
Jethro Hawk receives Nila as an inheritance present on his twenty-ninth birthday. Her life is his until she’s paid off a debt that’s centuries old. He can do what he likes with her—nothing is out of bounds—she has to obey.
There are no rules. Only payments.
This book was intense! I don’t usually read dark reads so I’m not really sure how to write this review. I usually need a HEA in my books and some pretty redeemable qualities about my hero and heroine and so I’m just not sure what to think about these characters. This was dark, gut clenching, and mildly upsetting but written so damn well. If this was written poorly it would have gotten a one butterfly if that but the author did a great job taking me on this mind boggling journey.
Nila Weaver is naive. Sheltered all her life from men by her brother and father has left her with no skills to discern favorable and non-favorable characteristics in the other sex. All she can do is throw herself into designing beautiful dresses and build a name for herself. When Jethro Hawk comes to Nila’s fashion show to whisk her away, she finally thinks that one man is worthy enough to stand up to her father and now she can enjoy some time with the opposite sex alone. But instead of a white knight on a white stead she gets his brother; tall dark and handsome with a cruel heart and even crueler intentions.
Jethro Hawk has a debt to collect. His family has been collecting debts from the Weaver family for six hundred years and now he is of the age to inherit his gift, Nila. This man is a cold and empty shell. He believes that he is entitled to Nila and that he can do anything he wants to her. And due to the fact that he is rich and a bully doesn’t help his attitude either. But what he didn’t count on was Nila. She’s worming her way underneath his skin and as much as he tries to fight it won’t be long until he succumbs to her naivety and pure heart.
This story ends on a cliffhanger and is the first in a six part series. It is told in first person points of view of both Nila and Jethro. I loved that Jethro got a say in the novel because it would’ve been horrible not to know what was going through his mind during everything. I think throughout the story my hate switch for Jethro was constantly turning on and off. There were so many characters you just loved to hate in this story! It was hard to read a hero that didn’t have any redeemable qualities so far but Nila kind of made up for it. She was weak but when put to the test she far surpassed my expectations of her. She would rise to the occasion with her head held high and attack them with her words which was awesome!
Ultimately this series has definitely got me intrigued. I’m apprehensive to know what is next for these characters but at the same time so very curious to see if Nila gets to have a HEA. I’m hoping that the way this first part was written will continue in the next books because I could feel every emotion of the characters; Nila’s helplessness, disgust, and anger, as well as Jethro’s steely demeanor, arrogance, and entitlement. If you are in the mood for a dark series that twists your insides and hurts delicate sensibilities then come find out why Nila is Indebted!!!
