When Sloane Avery stops to help a stranded driver, she finds more than a broken down car on the side of the road. Luke Evans is faster and sexier than her Maserati, but with her heart still on the mend, she’s not interested in taking him for a test drive. Despite their initial disdain for each other, emotion and passion simmer, complicating their fragile friendship. But when a tragic loss and devastating betrayal send them spiraling, their growing love isn’t enough to save them.
That was five years ago, practically a different lifetime and definitely a different Sloane. Before she’s been hardened by booze, sex, and as much distance as she could get from the past. Now, called home on a family emergency, she’s determined to hold onto her heart the next time she sees Luke.
Except Sloane’s not the only one who’s changed. Luke’s turned his life around. Only the reappearance of Sloane and the reminder of his biggest mistake can put a dent in his plans. Luke is set on fixing what he’s broken. But with her emotions boiling to the surface, Sloane needs to decide if falling in love is life’s greatest gift or its cruelest joke.
WorldBuilding: This novel takes place in Briscoll Bay and the Point. I loved the beach location and how the story had a small town vibe.
Characters: The main characters in this story are Sloane Avery and Luke Evans. Luke Evans is sex on a stick and everyone knows it. He’s good for a roll around in the sack but not much else. But under he’s playboy exterior is something no one imagined, a heart. He knows he’s no good for Sloane but he can’t help the pull he feels whenever she is around him. Will he buck up the courage and do something he has never done before or will he ruin their relationship before it can get off the ground? Sloane Avery hasn’t had the best track record with guys and one look at Luke Evans tells her exactly what she needs to know; to stay away! But after repeatedly running into each other, their unlikely friendship starts to flourish. As feelings build and walls start to crumble, they take their relationship to the next level. But what should have been a happy circumstance turns into a bitter betrayal that has Slone hightailing it out of Briscoll Bay. When she comes back, will the past prove to be too hard to get over or will people surprise her and make amends?
Plot: This story is broken into two parts. The second part happening five years later. I wasn’t too happy about the tragic twist or how the characters handled their feelings but I was surprised that a good chunk of the story happened in part one. I was also expecting Luke’s character to have a complete personality change in part two but that really wasn’t the case. Luke and Sloane’s romance was intense and very hot/cold. But they were able to grow and move on.
Writing: This novel is told in first person points of view of both Luke and Sloane. And is broken up into Before and After. I liked knowing both sides of the story even if I was yelling at the characters during the whole book!!
Curb Appeal: The cover is very new adult-y but I still really like it! Although I wish it reflected the story more instead of imitating the hero and heroine. The blurb is what really captured my attention. I love reuniting stories but the way the blurb described the characters compared to how they were in the story, were pretty different. I liked Slone’s attitude change in the second half, but Luke just seemed like the same old guy, just not as man whore-y.
Ultimately: This was an interesting new adult novel. I didn’t really ever connect with Luke’s character but despite that hiccup I enjoyed the story! All in all if you are in the mood for a heartbreaking tragedy and a relationship that is a long time coming then come check out Until We Break!!!
