One simple decision can end a future.
One simple persuasion can sever a life.
The moment Annisyn Kane slips her rake pick into the lock of a stranger’s door, the straight life she’s led the last few years is scratched out. In the past, the goal was never theft. It was to escape. From life. From death. To quiet the dreams that replayed an affliction she longed to forget. This night, though, was different. She was out of options.
The isolated house was supposed to be an easy target. In and out. No problems. But the simple job takes a twisted turn when Annisyn comes face to face with the only real love she ever had.
Five years ago, she could have persuaded Damian Mead to stay. She wasn’t willing to be the end of his future, so she let him go. Before the emotions from their tangled past have a chance to spin between them, Annisyn discovers that their startling encounter is the least of the night’s problems. There’s someone else in the house, and the only thing on his mind is revenge.
Worldbuilding: This story takes place in Maryland, both in the past and the present. The town had a feel of being smaller than a city but bigger than everyone knowing everyone else’s name and business.
Characters: The main characters in this novel were Annisyn aka Syn and Damien aka Stripes. Syn’s life has been a rough one. Due to a tragedy that befell her in the past, she’s scrappy, resourceful, and a little bit wild. But when it comes to letting someone in she’s more like a wallflower. After meeting Damien, Syn starts opening up and letting some of her walls fall down, but before all is said and done, another obstacle gets in her way. Can she overcome her reservations and finally have something real? Or will her own opinions and feelings get in the way of what she has always desired? Stripes never felt alive until he met Syn. Knowing Syn was like being in a tornado. She could take him up so high and make him feel so exhilarated but she also left devastation in her wake. When a chance encounter turns deadly can Stripes get over his hurt feelings and protect the woman that he loves or will the past prove to be too hard to forget and he lets her slip through his fingers yet again?
Plot: This novel had a pretty interesting plot line! With the story told in past and present points of view, the story arcs were divided into past and present as well. There was the growing romance arc of Syn and Damien in the past and in the present was a thriller/suspense arc!
Writing: This story was told in alternating past and present points of view of Syn. I liked how each point of view pulled me in and kept completely captivated!
Curb Appeal: This cover was definitely unique and was what initially piqued my interest! The blurb then completely pulled me in!! I love a second chance romance as much as the next person so reading this story was a no brainer!
Ultimately: This was a pretty intense novel! The characters and issues felt real and raw and the romance was sweet. All in all if you are in the mood for a story that has a heroine that realizes her past mistakes and wants to make amends as well as a hero that will do anything for his woman then come check out Sever!!
I couldn't have said that better myself! Reading is huge passion of mine. And I'm glad that books not only expand my world view but that they bring the wonderful people who created them into my life. You can always find me with a book and an eclectic mix of music on. I am a HEA junkie extraordinaire! I am a Beta reader, who loves helping authors bring their characters to life. As well as an avid romance reader (every and anything ;D) turned aspiring author.
