Disclaimer: This book contains a villain pretending to be a hero, a hero pretending to be a villain, a disco-dancing heroine, two overprotective sidekicks, a little bit of bad language, and a whole lot of swoony kissing.
Spirit committee leader Mandy Pennington is secretly in love with her best friend, Gus, but when he hooks up with her archenemy at a party, she decides to win him over once and for all. She just doesn’t know how. But who better to help than hot loner Caleb Torrs?
Caleb’s got his own problems, but when he sees Mandy pining over Gus at a party, he thinks she’s finally smoked the spirit stick and lost her mind. Maybe he has, too, because he just asked Mandy to be his fake girlfriend. She’ll get her loser friend’s attention, and he’ll get his stalker ex off his back. It’s a win-win.
But soon one fake date blends into the next and before he knows it, he actually wants to kiss Mandy. For real. Too bad their plan is working, and Gus is finally noticing the one girl Caleb just might be falling for…
I honestly was surprised by how much I loved this novel! These characters were relatable, funny, and so lovable that I didn’t want their story to end! Most young adult novels in my opinion, are lacking depth and a real emotional connection between the main characters, but this story delivered on all fronts.
Mandy Pennington aka Disco is no ordinary girl. Some people might find her 1970s disco loving ways, being kind, and heading the school’s spirit committee a bit bizarre but to her it’s just everyday life. Falling in love with her best friend Gus is a no brainer but when he hooks up with Mandy’s archenemy, new plans need to be advised. In comes the bad boy, Caleb Torrs. Can they turn Gus’s attention towards Mandy as they fake a relationship? Or will their fake relationship turn into something real? As a young adult heroine she was such a breath of fresh air! She was so badass in her own little way that I couldn’t help but fall in love with her character! I loved that she wasn’t a perfect rich girl, or the super nerdy quiet girl. She was a girl with learning disabilities that loves all things 70s and catches the eye of the hot bad boy!
Caleb Torrs is the bad boy. But what none seems to realize is that he is so much more. He’s not only the badass that ditches classes or the guy that only dates bad girls, he is a serious reader and practically a straight A student. He’s not all bad, that’s why when he sees Mandy pinning over Gus, he decides to help her out, but not necessarily out of the goodness of his heart. He needs his psycho ex to get off his back so by helping Mandy he helps himself, two birds, one stone. But he couldn’t have imagined that he would actually enjoy spending time with Disco let alone actually start to like her. But the heart wants what it wants and now he has to convince Disco that he is the man for her and not some dork that hasn’t given her the time of day. Can he get Disco to see that he isn’t playing a game anymore? Or will Gus beat Caleb to the punch and sweep Mandy off her feet?
I loved that this novel was inspired by the movie Sky High! This story didn’t have any super heroes or villains but I still completely and utterly entertained by it nonetheless! This story is told in third person points of view of Mandy and Caleb. It is also a standalone young adult novel.
Ultimately, I really, really wished this standalone was a series! I would’ve loved to read more of Caleb and Mandy’s adventures as well as their friends! All in all, if you are in the mood for a hero and heroine that couldn’t be more opposite, and who find out that love is not a game then come check out Resisting the Rebel!!!!
I couldn't have said that better myself! Reading is huge passion of mine. And I'm glad that books not only expand my world view but that they bring the wonderful people who created them into my life. You can always find me with a book and an eclectic mix of music on. I am a HEA junkie extraordinaire! I am a Beta reader, who loves helping authors bring their characters to life. As well as an avid romance reader (every and anything ;D) turned aspiring author.
