Young interior designer Ava O’Shea has an appointment for a first consultation at The Manor with the owner, Mr Jesse Ward. She is expecting nothing more than an overweight, cravat wearing, well-to-do countryman, and on arrival, nothing would suggest otherwise. How wrong could she be? This Man is devastatingly handsome, charming and confident. He is also a conceited, hedonistic playboy, who knows no boundaries. Ava desperately does not want to be attracted to him, but she can’t control the overwhelming effect he has on her. Every instinct is telling her to run, so she does, but Jesse Ward is not so willing to let her go. He wants her and is determined to have her. She knows she is heading for heartbreak, but how can she run when he won’t let her?

When I first looked at this book I was intrigued. The blurb seemed good, the cover was gorgeous, even more so now that I’ve read the novel, and it seemed to have pretty good ratings. So I thought hey, this book could be right up my alley, let’s give it a try. Boy was I wrong. When I started the novel it was reminiscent of 50 Shades of Grey, so I was pretty excited, but the actions of the characters ended up just rubbing me the wrong way.
Jesse Ward is the king of his domain. The Manor has the façade of being a posh country hotel but in actuality it is something much more sensual. When he hires the beautiful Miss O’Shea, he is completely knocked off his axis. From the moment he sees her, he knows she has to be his, even if she resists. The more he pursues her the harder she pushes him away, until finally he has her in his grasp. But he has secrets that could turn her against him. And the more time he spends with her, he realizes he needs her but the secrets he holds become harder and harder to hide. Can he keep Ava in the dark while keeping her love? Or will his secrets come out and shatter their relationship?
Ava O’Shea is an interior designer and after getting out of a four-year relationship, she wants to enjoy her single life. But when she gets called to design rooms at The Manor, all bets are off. Meeting Jesse is like getting a sledgehammer to the face. His good looks, charming smile, and twinkle in his eye are all she needs to fall head over heels for him but not all is what it seems. The more controlling and possessive he gets the more she wants to get away but is helpless to do so. Can their relationship evolve from more than a few rolls around in the sheets? Or will his past break them apart before they can even really get started?
There were so many questionable actions that Jesse did, where I was expecting Ava to run screaming away but she always stayed; being helpless to do anything but be captured in his compelling magnetism. And I actually could have been on board for their romance if Jesse’s actions stemmed from a good place but he was too arrogant and condescending for me to like let alone be completely turned on by him. He was completely selfish and would always take, never give. He also manipulated the crap out of her and her freaking roommate.
I gave this story three stars because it did have some type of story line and wasn’t a complete waste of time. But at the same time I did feel like this story had more sex than substance. There were times I liked Jesse and his interactions with Ava but those were few and far between. Over all this story wasn’t something I enjoyed and just left me with a bad taste in my mouth.
Ultimately, I thought Jesse was a controlling and possessive guy that went way past an alpha-asshole and into someone who was bordering on abusive. And I say “bordering on” because Ava never “felt” abused but nonetheless Ava’s weakness and Jesse’s over-the-top attitude made for an eye rolling story. All in all, don’t just take my word for it, go and check out what other reviewers think, but I would tell others to skip this one.
