WEREWOLVES OF THE WILD WEST
Grant Wade is a former Texas Ranger. He’s also a Lycan Alpha and, in the ghost town of Desperado, he’s found a perfect refuge for his desert pack and a place to shelter other werewolves in need of a safe place.
Determined to reclaim her full birthright, Paxton Hall goes home for the first time in decades. Her plan to strike a deal with Desperado’s new owner doesn’t work any better than her attempts to resist this sexy cowboy. Even as she falls for him, Paxton has no idea what he’s trying to protect her from–his animal desire, her own true nature and a rogue predator on the prowl…
Worldbuilding: The setting of Desperado, Arizona was very atmospheric. The paranormal elements – shifters, vampires – were in a way traditional (due to the cowboy thing, I felt) yet original, making for a very interesting mix.
Characters: Paxton was a rebel which made me like her quite a bit. Grant was all considerate alpha, protective, passionate. They had good chemistry and I really rooted for their happy ending.
Plot: The insta-mate sort of scenario doesn’t often work for me, though here it was kind of slow burn slash arranged, and the spin was interesting. I really liked the layers of the story and the mystery surrounding Paxton and her past and family.
Writing: Third person, past tense narrative, his/her POV. There were a lot of flashbacks which I never like, and since they were under siege pretty much all the time there was little banter which is a lot ofthe fun for me in romance.
Curb Appeal: Cool cover, hooking blurb – impulsive buy material for my werewolf PNR cravings.
I recommend Desert Wolf to fans of werewolves stories with mating tropes plus interesting twists, and to fans of cowboy romance with a paranormal spin.
