Buried in the shadows of the city, there’s a hotel called The Pope. Ailing, empty, and dark—it sits abandoned and surrounded by a forgotten mystery.
But you think it’s true, don’t you, Kai Mori? The story about the hidden twelfth floor. The mystery of the dark guest who never checked in and never checks out. You think I can help you find that secret hideaway and get to him, don’t you?
You and your friends can try to scare me. You can try to push me. Because even though I struggle to hide everything I feel when you look at me—and have ever since I was a girl—I think maybe what you seek is so much closer than you’ll ever realize.
I will never betray him.
So sit tight.
On Devil’s Night, the hunt will be coming to you.
You have no idea what I seek, Little One. You don’t know what I had to become to survive three years in prison for a crime I would gladly commit again.
No one can know what I’ve turned into.
I want that hotel, I want to find him, and I want this over.
I want my life back.
But the more I’m around you, the more I realize this new me is exactly who I was meant to be.
So come on, kid. Don’t chicken out. My house is on the hill. So many ways in, and good luck finding your way out.
I’ve seen your hideaway. Time to see mine.
*Hideaway is a romantic suspense suitable for ages 18+. While the romance is a stand-alone, the plot is a continuation of events that began in CORRUPT (Devil’s Night, #1). It is strongly recommended that you have read Corrupt prior to reading this.
Worldbuilding: This story takes place in Meridian City as well as Thunder Bay.
Characters: The main characters in this novel are Nikova Banks and Kai Mori. Banks hasn’t had the easiest life. But it’s her life and she’s going to make it work for herself and the one person she loves most in the whole world. Unfortunately, there are others who would love to see her world destroyed, in particular a one Mr. Kai Mori. But what Kai fails to understand is, all these years Banks has been watching him and his little crew and she knows them better than they know themselves. Can Banks finally achieve the life that she has been toiling for, for so many years? Or will the devils destroy the only thing she holds dear? Kai is ready for this nightmare to be put behind him. All he wants is to protect himself and his friends but has decided to dive headfirst into danger. Once he comes up for air, he’s intrigued by the resurfacing of someone from his past aka Banks. Can Kai unlock her secrets before it’s too late? Or will outside forces conspire to keep them apart forever?
Plot: This story continues the long story arc of the good guys versus the bad guy but also starts a new romance arc between Banks and Kai.
Writing: This novel is written in first person points of view of Banks and Kai, as well as past and present points of view. It is the second novel in the Devil’s Night series and even though the romance aspect written as a standalone, the main plot is a continuation from the first novel. So, it is highly recommended that readers read the first story in the series: Corrupt.
Curb Appeal: This cover is gorgeous! I didn’t know what to expect but I really think it fits the story! The blurb pretty much draws battle lines in the sand for each of the main characters and gives little information on where the story might actually go.
Ultimately: This novel was everything I wanted it to be and more!!! I absolutely love Penelope Douglas and this novel pushes the boundaries in the new adult/dark romance sphere and it’s amazing! I loved Kai and Banks so much but the teaser for the next novel has my head completely messed up, but in a crazy good way!!! All in all, if you are in the mood for a crazily twisted story that honestly has a heart of gold then come check out Hideaway!!!!!
