This thrilling sequel to Traveler doles out adventure and heartbreak in equal measure as it takes readers through a kaleidoscope of intricately crafted worlds of wonder, discovery, and danger.
You’re still you no matter where you go.
Jessa has learned the hard way that traveling to alternate dimensions isn’t all delicious, glittering desserts and fancy parties: it also means accidentally running into people she thought she’d never see again. Still mourning a devastating loss, Jessa isn’t really prepared for the arrival of a reckless version of someone she once loved who is now bent on revenge. Add an increasingly complicated relationship with her best friend Ben, the reappearance of an old enemy, and the threat of the multiverse collapsing, and Jessa’s got a lot on her plate. She may be destined to help save an infinite multitude of worlds… but in the end, all Jessa really wants to do is save her friends.
In Dreamer, the young adult fantasy follow up to Traveler, author L. E. DeLano delivers a gripping, emotional story that will leave readers on the edge of their seat.
Guest Post: It’s all about wonder
by L.E. DeLano
When I was seventeen, and my family and I were in Illinois visiting some old family friends, when I saw fireflies for the first time. I was blown away. We didn’t have them where I grew up in the southwest and to actually see one – let alone a whole backyard full of them – was honest-to-God just a moment of magic.
I stood out there in the middle of that yard, catching fireflies and staring at them in wonder until my parents called me in the house (more like forced me into the house) and I still, to this day, thrill to the sight of fireflies.
That moment of wonder has stayed with me ever since. And as I sat down to write my way through the heartache and peril and struggles in DREAMER, my editor’s words played through my mind: don’t forget the magic.
In TRAVELER, Jessa has this tremendous, magical thing happen to her and while she’s suitably freaked out and off-balance by it, she was also blown away by the wonder of it all.
When it came time to bring the saga to its conclusion in DREAMER, she’s been through so much that the early drafts of the story had her outwitting, powering through and overcoming – but not so much surrounded by wonder. You should never let magic go by without breathing it in a little.
I started trying to find ways to shade that, paint it in, let it surround her. I worked on making her a little more reflective about it all – not enough to slow down the action, mind you – but she should take a beat or two to really, really feel it all and be amazed by the circumstances of her life more.
I think that’s an important lesson no matter what kind of story you tell. Even if you’re not writing Sci-Fi or Fantasy, you can always find the moments of wonder, whether it’s the wonder of new love, or validation, or the wonder of just being alive after all your character has been through. Those moments deserve their spotlight, and they bring the magic to your manuscript like nothing else can.
DREAMER was such a labor of love, and just like my fireflies, I hope the wonder of this adventure stays with you long after you close the book.
