Smoke and Mirrors (The Gifted #1)

  • By Marie Treanor
  • Editions: ebook, paperback
  • Published: November 6, 2012
  • Genre: Adult Paranormal Romance / Suspense
  • Deceit and desire, and a treasure beyond price…
    When struggling Scottish writer Nell Black accepts a one-off job with the police, translating for an arson suspect from the isolated ex-Soviet republic of Zavrekestan, she stumbles into a terrifying world of organized crime and paranormal abilities that turns her whole belief system upside down. Faced with an incomparable thief, hit men who spontaneously combust, gangsters, drug dealers, British Intelligence and a fiery goddess, Nell no longer knows who to trust. The man who saves her life is a criminal to whom deceit is second nature. He has more smoke screens and more plans in motion than anyone else can keep track of. He is, moreover, probably insane. Even his fellow gangsters are afraid of him. So why is he the one man Nell wants to touch her?

    Rodion Kosar is in trouble. His convoluted plans all lead to one goal – the retrieval of his treasure – and to achieve that, he needs Nell to believe he isn’t the bad guy. He has many reasons beyond his own desires to make love to her. Especially when a plan goes wrong and he has to play dead before someone really kills him – either the police, the menacing Russian crime lord known as the Bear, or the powerful Guardian of the Gifted whom he’s defied once too often. Nell’s burgeoning gift of second sight could be his best route to the treasure, and yet keeping her with him spells danger. For Nell has her own agenda, her own mission, and she could just as easily cause his final downfall.

    Champagne versus Computer Chat: Release Day Celebrations
    by Marie Treanor

    Livia, thanks so much for having me at Butterfly-o-Meter Books! It’s a pleasure to be here! As you probably know, I’m currently celebrating the release of my latest book, Smoke and Mirrors – and if you don’t know, I’m more than happy to tell you about it .
    I’m often asked how I celebrate a new book, and I usually answer that in the evening, my husband and I share a bottle of wine – or even champagne, if we’re feeling flush. The trouble is, after I said this the last time, I realized it wasn’t strictly true anymore. I might, if I’m lucky, grab a few sips in between other things, but a release day celebration no longer seems to be that lazy, slightly smug evening of sitting around getting tipsy and feeling pleased with myself.
    Don’t get me wrong, I still get excited about a release, and every single one is important to me. But I no longer seem to have time to relax and celebrate in the old style. Instead, I’m glued to the computer, spreading the word, chatting to readers, fulfilling commitments to online events made some time ago. And in between, there’s the stuff of real life to take care of: making dinner for my family, sorting out my daughter’s bedtime, and trying to make sure her teenage brothers do their homework and remember to come home!
    So the glass of celebratory wine sits neglected on the table and I eventually leave it there when I fall into bed.
    But the really funny part of all this is that I don’t mind in the slightest. I wouldn’t swap my increasingly troublesome family for the world, and I get a real buzz out of all the online chatter about my new book which is, of course, my other baby . So when I got to bed this release day, I felt just as exhilarated as if I’d drunk half a bottle of champagne! Plus, the fun now goes on for several days, and I get to come on fabulous blogs like this one and celebrate some more.
    So, all you other busy people out there – cheers! How do you like to celebrate important events in your life, big and small? I’d love to know.

    { Livia says: Always a pleasure to have you over! Hmm…I for one tend to celebrate things with my family, we have dinner and toast to the event. I try to do a celebration with everyone online too, if it’s something they’d be interested in. 😀 }
